Room, 2025

3D printed resin, scale 1:50

This work reconstructs one of the rooms of the Park Hotel in Carlton. Although the hotel’s architecture and interiors appear non-carceral, between 2020 and 2022 its rooms were used as detention cells for asylum seekers and refugees. In each, two people were confined; the windows were sealed shut and darkened with black film to prevent any visual communication with the public outside.

In this model, the room is reimagined so that its materiality reflects these conditions. The reconstruction produces an uncanny distortion, shifting our perception of the space to reveal its carceral character. The use of black translucent resin reflects the architectural redaction of the space, where the banal surfaces of the hotel’s interior concealed its function as a site of incarceration.
